Extra Time
We’ve all got to die some day. That I know for sure. But it would be nice if we could put it off for as long as possible and add some extra years in our lives. I read about some health rules that would do just that, i want to share some of them that i think is very important and helpful, especially to all my fellow MEN out there.
1. GET MARRIED – Add 5 years. Marriage has long been regarded as good for men’s mental and physical health - as long as you’re happily wed, of course. Numerous studies have shown that people who wed have a longer life expectancy, lower death rates and increased psychological well-being. And a recent study found that marriage and cohabitation were most especially beneficial for, ehem, men.
2. EAT DARK CHOCOLATE – Add 1 year. This is just great news for chocoholics like me – dark chocolate that contains 70% cocoa or more is a rich source of antioxidants, which destroy cancer-causing free radicals. Again, a study found that cocoa contains nearly double the amount of antioxidants of red wine and tea. Chocolate also reduces cholesterol and boosts feel-good endorphins, but is high in saturated fat so enjoy it in moderation.
3. SOCIALIZE WTH FRIENDS – Add 4.5 years. Hanging out with friends isn’t just a laugh, itmay also lengthen your life. A study published found that socializing increases your sense of well-being and hekps you cope with the pressures of life. So, if you are one of those who just lurk at home and do nothing, beware.
4. GIVE UP SMOKING – Add 10 years. It’s no news flash. we all now that smoking is bad for us. but a recent update on a study in smoking’s ill effects found that quitting at 30 virtually eliminates the risk of dying prematurely and giving up at 50 halves it. Ditchng the evil weed at 60, 50, 40 or 30 buys you respectively three, six, nine or ten years of life expectancy. Bad news on smoking: It’s better than we thought at killing people. The good news: Stopping smoking gives you more extra years of life than we thought.
5. AVOID HEAVY DRINKING – Add 8 years. Heavy drinking wreaks havoc on your body. Excessive consumption of alcohol can cause a lot of diseases and health problems. And let’s not forget about the pride-damaging issues of impotence and reduced fertility. So the question is: How much is too much then? An average man shouldn’t exceed 21 units a week or 4 a day (around 2 pints of beer). So bingeing is a big no-no. A sobering thought, isn’t it?
6. HAVE A GOOD LAUGH – Add 8 years. Who doesn’t like a good joke? But did you know that the mmune system is positively affected by laughter? When we laugh, cells that produce antibodies increase, as do T cells that attack viruses. People who laugh heartily on a regular basis also have lower than average blood pressure and a decreased risk of heart disease. Plus, laughter can benefit digestion and is a great workout for your diaphragm and abdominal muscles. Wow.
7. GET JUST ENOUGH SLEEP – Add 2 years. According to a research, 8 hours of sleep is too much. They reckon 7 hours is the optimum period and any more or less than that increases the risk of illness and an early death. So fluff your pillows and set your alarm clocks.
